The Gran Vía project was conceived in 1862, when some transformations were already underway in the center of Madrid, but it wasn't until 1910 that the work began. For that time period, it was a large-scale project that involved the demolition of hundreds of existing buildings, as well as the change and removal of more than 12 existing streets. The idea was not only to improve traffic circulation in the area but to give the city a new image of a metropolis. The construction was divided into three sections that were completed one after the other until 1931 with a length of 0.8 mi. Each of the sections consists of buildings of striking architecture designed, mostly by Spanish architects. Some visitors nickname it Little Broadway with a varied offer of theaters, cinemas, hotels and shops. It is also used to hold massive celebrations.
