Initially the land where the castle is located was donated in the fourteenth century to Pedro González de Mendoza, who was an ecclesiastic politician and known as the Great Cardinal of Spain. The first castle was built at the end of the fourteenth century where the Mendoza family lived. Later it was Don Diego Hurtado Mendoza who began the construction of the new gothic style castle that we know today. The work began in the fifteenth century between the years 1475-1478, and was completed by his son Don Iñigo López de Mendoza. With the decline of the Mendoza family in the sixteenth century, the building suffered from abandonment for many years. In 1974 it was decided to begin the restoration of the building, and it was opened to the public in 1977. Currently it receives approximately 60,000 visitors annually. Reunions and cultural activities are held there.
