Over the centuries it has been called by different names, such as Plaza of Arrabal, Royal Plaza, and Constitution Plaza. However, after the Spanish Civil War, in 1939, it was named Plaza Mayor. For most of the time it was used as a local market, not as the square as it is seen today. It has a baroque style and was designed by Juan de Herrera and Juan Gomez de Mora. The construction started during the reign of Philip III in 1617. In 1790 it suffered a devastating fire; the reconstruction was led by architect Juan de Villanueva. All of the reforms were completed in 1854, which included the statute of Philip III in the center of the Plaza as is seen today.
