The museum building was designed by the architect Juan de Villanueva and was built during the Charles III period (1759-1788). Initially it was not clear as to how the building would be used, but when Fernando VII came back to Madrid in 1814 his wife Isabel de Braganza proposed to use the building as an art museum. It was finally inaugurated in 1819, and in 2019 they held a 200 year celebration. It is one of the most important art museums in the world, with about 3 million visitors yearly. Most of the visiting works are from Goya, Diego Velazquez, El Greco , and Bosch.
