At the center (Km 0) of the Spanish roads network, for years (since around the middle of the XIX century) it has been a social meeting place where a dozen of streets converge giving it a square appearance. Over the years, many buildings around the plaza have been replaced, but the iconic Real Casa de Correos building is the only survivor. At the beginning of the 1800s, Madrid was controlled by the Napoleon army. On May 2, 1808 the local inhabitants rose against the French army, which was well armed. About 200 Madrilenos died; this incident resulted in the Independence War.
