The building where it is located was originally a hospital, initially built during the period of King Phillip II in the sixteenth century. Then in the eighteenth century, King Ferdinand VI decided to redo a new building, to provide better health service to the city. This new building had the participation of the architects Jose Hermosilla and Italian Francisco Sabatini. In 1969 the hospital was closed and in 1980 important extensions and renovations were done to transform the hospital building to the actual art museum, which was opened to the public in 1988. In 2001 it suffers an important expansion with a new building which was inaugurated in 2005 adding about 30,000 square meters more. The permanent exhibitions are related to contemporary art, especially for twentieth century with excellent exhibitions works from Dali, Picasso and Miro. The most visited masterwork is the Gernica from Picasso 1937. In the last 50 years the collection of international artists has increased. In the main entrance, they placed a Brushstroke sculpture from the American painter Roy Lichtenstein. The museum received over 4 million visitors in 2019.
