Originally created by Philip II of Spain next to the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, later Ferdinand VI decided to take it to the city of Madrid in 1755 to Orchard of Migas Calientes, due to the expansion that the garden was experiencing Charles III decided to move it in 1781 to where it currently is, next to the Prado Museum and El Retiro Park on Paseo del Prado. In the 19th century this was considered one of the most important botanical gardens in Europe thanks to the wide variety of plant collections it had. During the 60s the garden suffered an important abandonment that led to its closing in 1974 to restore it in depth trying to maintain its original style. Actually the garden has five greenhouses it has about 1,500 trees and over 25,000 plants and flowers. The herbarium is the biggest in Spain and holds over a million specimens from around the world.
