The old stadium of Chamartin was in bad condition after the civil war, and the decision was made to replace it. The construction of the new stadium was started in 1944 and completed in 1947, with an inauguration game between Real Madrid and Belenenses. The initial name of the new stadium was Nuevo Chamartin, and it had a capacity of 75,125 spectators. In the 1950s it was expanded to 125,000 spectators and the administration decided to change the name to Santiago Bernabeu, in honor to the former president of the club. For decades it has being suffering through different renovations; one of the last plan proposals approved was the creation of a mobile integral roof. Currently the capacity is about 81,000 spectators.
