The temple is about 2,200 years old and was given as a gift to Spain in 1968. It is said that in the New Kingdom, in Egypt, there was a small sanctuary over which king Adijalamani built a small chapel at the beginning of century II BC dedicated to the gods Amon of Debod. Adijalamani, and his predecessor Arqamani, built many temples in the locations of Lower Nubia including Philae Island. In the year 30 BC Rome conquered Egypt and the temple was decorated with scenes of emperor August. For 12 centuries it was closed and abandoned until that new Europeans travelers rediscovered it. The installation of the temple in the current location in Madrid started in 1970 and in 1972 was opened to the public.
